Frequently Asked Questions

If I’ve never practiced yoga before, what is the best way to start?

Yoga is great exercise for people of all ages and all fitness levels. To get the most benefit as a beginner be sure to enroll in a Beginners Level class. Check our schedule and class descriptions for Beginners Hatha Yoga, Gentle Morning Yoga, Beginners Vinyasa Flow, Restorative Yoga, Qigong, or call us to talk about choosing the best class for you.

Do I have to become a member or may I “drop in” to classes when it’s convenient for me?

Simply check our schedule on-line to be sure a class is available and feel free to drop in to any class that suits you.

Do I have to register for an entire session or may I "drop in" to classes when it's convenient for me?

You may drop in but we strongly encourage our students to make a firm commitment and register for an entire session. We also realize that for some students it simply isn’t feasible to do this, which is why we do offer a "drop-in" option. The "drop-in" fee is $25.00 for students who are NOT currently registered in any classes at WE ARE ONE and $20.00 for those who ARE enrolled but choose to attend other classes on occasion. "Drop-in" students are admitted to class on a first come, first served basis at the sole discretion of the teacher. We do prioritize our "enrolled" students.

If I can’t afford the drop-in fee of $20.00 can I still take a class? What is a Karma Voucher?

In the event that you can’t pay the full suggested donation to drop in to a class we will issue you a karma voucher to fill out which will give you an opportunity to offer your time in service to the WE ARE ONE: yoga community. You can list your skills on the voucher and we will call you when we need you.

What is your "make-up" policy if I have to miss a class?

If you have a “one class per week” membership you are free to attend any class in any given week. If you must miss an entire week, you may choose to take two classes in any week within your membership period.

Is there sufficient parking near your studio?

Yes. You may park on the neighboring streets or in the parking lot behind the studio. The parking spaces in front of the studio are limited to one hour parking. Most of our classes run for 90 minutes. Parking your car in the front of the building is at your own risk.

Where is the entrance to your studio?

It can be a bit tricky to find our studio but we promise it will be well worth the effort. The entrance is on Market Street West in the Kentlands/Lakelands commercial area, between "The Yellow Balloon" (children’s haircutting establishment) and "Chyten Tutoring." Enter through the red door to the left of "The Yellow Balloon" and take the stairs to the second floor. Ours is the first door on the right at the second floor landing.

What time should I arrive to class?

It’s best to arrive a few minutes before the start of class so that you have time to settle in.

What if I am late to class? Should I still come?

Definitely. Just be mindful not to be disruptive when you enter. Quietly join in and save explanations and apologies for the end of class.

How do I know which class is best for me?

We make every effort to help you choose the class that most fits your needs, your ability level, and your personality. You may call 301-987-0884 to chat with someone directly or you may review the class descriptions and teacher bios to find a class to try out as a "drop-in" student. We often offer a "free class week" between class sessions. Refer to our class schedule for dates and times.

Do I have to have a particular spiritual orientation to practice yoga or any of the other classes you offer at WE ARE ONE?

No. Yoga, as taught and practiced at WE ARE ONE, is certainly inspiring but it is not spiritually dogmatic. Regardless of your personal spiritual beliefs, we welcome you. We take pride in the fact that we are a diverse community of practitioners who enrich each other’s lives by embracing the true meaning of yoga... Union.

Will I be required to change my eating habits if I take yoga or one of your other classes?

No. Over time, you may find that you want to change many things about your approach to life, including your eating habits, but that will be a change that comes from within you not one that’s ever imposed upon you at WE ARE ONE. As mentioned above, we are a diverse community. Vegetarians, carnivores, dessert lovers, special dieters, and omnivores happily practice side-by-side, each honoring the other’s choices.

What’s the appropriate age range for practicing yoga?

People of all ages benefit from the practice yoga. Many of our "beginner" students come to their first class at retirement age and continue to practice for the rest of their lives. Young children and teens often find that yoga helps them to focus and improves their school performance. Adults working in high stress jobs find yoga to be invaluable for maintaining their mental and physical health. Our needs change as we age and so do the benefits of yoga.

What should I wear to class?

Dress comfortably in anything that allows a full range of motion. T-shirts and athletic shorts or sweatpants are fine. While "yoga fashions" are available today, they are entirely optional and certainly not necessary.

Do I have to bring my own mat or other props?

No. We are happy to provide all the necessary props for your classes. However, some students do prefer to bring their own and we have a fine selection of props for sale at the studio should you decide you’d like to purchase any.
